| NYSASWM Christiansen-Roller-White Founders' Scholarship Program The New York State Association for Solid Waste Management (NYSASWM) Board of Directors recently voted to name its annual scholarship program after the three founders of the organization. The Scholarship will henceforth be called the Christiansen-Roller-White Founders' Scholarship in honor of Howard Christiansen, Robert H. Roller, and William White. These three men who ran solid waste systems in what now is designated as NYSASWM's Western region were instrumental in starting the organization that has become 400-plus members strong since its inception in 1975. NYSASWM is an organization which strives for proper solid waste management by utilizing the hierarchy of reduction, reuse, recycling, energy recovery and engineered landfilling. An important part of the Association’s mission is to promote the education of the next generation of New York’s solid waste managers. Therefore, the Association is proud to sponsor this scholarship program. This 2009 scholarship program is open to full-time college students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year and full-time students entering or in graduate school. Eligible candidates should be pursuing a degree in environmental science, planning, engineering or other suitable major related to the field of solid waste management at a New York College or University. | 2008 Scholarship Winners |
The NYSASWM Board awarded $15,000 in Christiansen-Roller-White Founders’ Scholarship funds to seven applicants, at its May 4 meeting. Those receiving $3,000 scholarships each are: Mason Baziw and Anna L. Wilson – both from the Rochester Institute of Technology, studying Environmental Health & Safety Management; Kara Oberg of Ithaca College, studying Environmental Science Jonathan Forward, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), studying Civil & Environmental Engineering. Three students were awarded $1,000 each. They are: Robert J. Viola, Jr. of Columbia University, studying Urban Planning; Albert J. Brooks, Jr., of RPI, studying Civil & Environmental Engineering and Isabella Richard of RIT, studying Environmental Management Since the inception of the scholarship in 2000, NYSASWM has given $38,000 in scholarships to 21 students. The intent is to further the education of the next generation of solid waste managers who are studying in the fields of environmental science, planning, engineering or other suitable major related to the field of solid waste management at a New York State Public or Private College or University.
